Hugo’s early years were spent in the small town of Hopkinsville, Kentucky before his family relocated to Kalamazoo, Michigan when he was six years old. Hugo attended schools in Kalamazoo and graduated from St. John’s High School in 1988.

Following high school graduation, Hugo studied political science at Western Michigan University where he met his future wife Sarah-Jeanne Burki. Hugo earned his B.A. degree in 1992 and then attended the University of Michigan Law School where he achieved his J.D. degree in 1996.

After completing law school, Hugo took a job as an associate attorney with the law firm Holland & Knight LLP where he worked for six years before becoming a Partner at the firm in 2002. While at Holland & Knight LLP, Hugo specialized in commercial litigation and represented a variety of businesses including manufacturers, retailers and technology companies throughout the Midwest United States. In 2009, Hugo left Holland & Knight LLP to become a solo practitioner and has since represented clients in a wide variety of legal matters including litigation, business transactions and estate planning.
